Biography
Prof. Petar Sabev Varbanov is an internationally recognised researcher, academic leader, and educator in the fields of Process Integration, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Sustainability, Circular Economy, and Environmental Footprint Reduction. Over more than three decades of professional activity, he has contributed to the development of advanced methodologies for improving resource efficiency, reducing industrial emissions, optimising energy systems, and enhancing the sustainability of industrial and regional infrastructures.
He currently serves as Chief Scientific Advisor at Széchenyi István University in Győr, Hungary, where he supports research excellence, postgraduate education, doctoral supervision, and strategic scientific development. He is part-time affiliated with the Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic, as a researcher.
Prof. Varbanov earned his PhD in Process Integration from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, under the supervision of internationally recognised leaders in the field. His doctoral research focused on the optimisation and synthesis of process utility systems for low-emission industrial applications. He later obtained the Dr. Habil. degree from the University of Miskolc, Hungary, and was awarded the title of Professor by the President of Poland, with the backing of Cracow University of Technology, Poland.
His international research career includes two prestigious Marie Curie grants awarded by the European Commission. From 2004 to 2006, he was a Marie Curie Individual Research Fellow at Technische Universität Berlin, working on the optimisation of energy-integrated pressure-swing distillation processes. Subsequently, he received a Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant for the ESCHAINS project (Energy Supply Chains Design and Management for Higher Efficiency and Sustainable Future), supporting the continuation of his research activities at the University of Pannonia, Hungary.
